Phil Dawson is one of the UK’s most distinctive guitar voices — a boundary-crossing player, bandleader and composer whose sound unites the deep grooves of Afrobeat, hilife and reggae, fluid and rich jazz harmony, and the expressive force of improvisation. Phil has carved out a space where traditions from Africa, south america and the UK’s vibrant jazz and tropical scenes converge with compelling originality. His fluid, expressive guitar style and command of global rhythmic languages have made him a distinctive voice in the UK’s cross-cultural jazz scene.

His recent releases on Funkiwala/Kudos Records have further earned him a reputation as a creative force, blending fiery interplay with rich global textures. His most recent album saw Dawson expand his sound, featuring an array of guests each adding a new dimension to a multi-faceted, multicultural vision. (full details here.)

Having collaborated historically with legendary figures including Khaled, Osibisa, Tony Allen, Mulatu Astatke, and Hugh Masekela as well as London icons Dele Sosimi, Soothsayers, Lokkhi Terra and a host of Brit jazz projects, Phil remains deeply rooted in multiple lineages of groove and improvisation whilst making music in the here and now. On stage, Phil’s sets flow with warmth, spontaneity and connection — drawing audiences into a richly rhythmic world both grounded and exploratory.
